C&L 73MM MAF FOR 1989-1995 TAURUS SHO
Owners of 1989-1995 Taurus SHO vehicles have always had lots of confusing options when upgrading to a larger MAF unit. Over the years, primarily due to the internet, there has been plenty of conflicting information as to what exactly is the best option for these vehicles. When we originally developed a mass airflow unit for these vehicles ten years ago, we used three different test vehicles for calibration testing. The original SHO calibration that we developed was based on flowbench and vehicle testing. When the dynojet dynos became available, and we purchased one of the first ones in 1995, we used it to test our calibrations again. In all of our testing, the original calibration showed to be correct for the application.
Regardless of this fact, we understand that people who browse the internet forums are told by the self-proclaimed experts that they must use a standard 5.0 Mustang "19lb" calibration on a Taurus SHO. What most people do not realize is that the difference between the "official" SHO calibration and the "19lb" Mustang calibration is minor, with the Mustang calibration being slightly richer. For example, where the Mustang calibration will deliver an idle voltage of .82 volts, the "SHO" calibration is sending a signal of approximately .78 volts. In our own dyno testing, there was no appreciable horsepower difference between the two calibrations, but every once in a while, the idle was not as smooth with the richer "19lb" Mustang calibration.

Dyno testing has shown the 73mm unit to be good for 11 front wheel horsepower when used in conjunction with a standard K&N panel filter on an otherwise stock V6 SHO. The air meter alone will typically account for between 7-8 HP of the total gain. We don't mind selling our customers either calibration, so long as they are happy. Just don't expect a big difference between the two calibrations. Something of important note that ALL performance-minded SHO owners must know is not to judge a mass airflow unit by its rated size. Most SHO specialist/enthusiasts sell a factory Ford 80mm unit from the 1992-1997 Lincoln Mark VIII or 1996-1998 Mustang 4.6L (they are the same). What they don't tell you is this... Even though it is called a "80mm" unit, it's actual flow capacity is less than even our SMALLEST 73mm unit that we sell.
The factory SHO unit is a 55mm unit and it flows 550 cfm. The Ford "80mm" unit only flows 670 cfm, and our 73mm unit flows 700 cfm. Another thing that must be understood is that you can not simply install an 80mm unit on your vehicle without running other modifictions. This is because the 80mm unit was never intended by Ford to be used on this application. Not only must you change the plumbing to the engine, but you also HAVE to use a custom computer chip just to allow the car to run with the 80mm unit. Without this chip, the vehcle will not even run properly. If you are going down the highway and your chip malfunctions, you are S.O.L.
We are happy to sell you either calibration for your SHO, but we do want you to know the facts to help you understand your options.
